About SOLZ
Solz House Shoes were designed and created by me,
Carmel Taylor.
I'm a designer with a background in product design. I've designed stationary, homewares, and jewelry. And I teach design.
I live and breathe design. I am compelled to design. And I have always been interested in design. Whether I'm working or not, I am always thinking about design. I am attracted to things that look good and have a sense of style.
Why Solz?
I am passionate about design as a way to solve problems. Solz began with a simple thought: what product could I come up with that would be unique and sustainable - and would fill a gap in the marketplace.
I looked to my friends, family and my own lifestyle for clues. Little by little I realized that traditional slippers have limitations: clunky, unable to be laundered or washed, and frumpy looking.
I set out to design a slipper that was lightweight and comfortable, looked to Eastern and Scandinavian design for inspiration, and was "green".
I spent a long time working on the Solz design. Finally, I came up with a pair of house shoes that was truly an improvement over traditional slippers. They're beautiful on your feet. They travel well. They're lightweight. They wash well and retain their shape after repeated washings. And they're durable and green.
A lot of thought went into these stylish Solz.
These days, many people take their shoes off at the door. I recently read an article that explained that the easiest way to keep your home toxin free is to leave your shoes at the door. Your feet walk through all sorts of things that you don't want to bring into your home.
When I designed these House Shoes, I pictured a shelf in an entryway filled with Solz of every size. When a guest comes to the door, they can put something warm and welcoming onto their feet.
My hope is that you can enjoy your Solz at your door, in your home, and on your vacation.
Eastern and Scandinavian Design
I love the Solz design because these House Shoes are beautifully simple, high quality, have a sense of aesthetic balance, and exude a minimalist quality. They're also about treading lightly (move around quietly rather than noisily).
Here are some examples of the Eastern and Scandinavian Design that inspired Solz. On the left is some Japanese furniture. On the right is a Scandinavian interior.

Green & Sustainable
What makes a product gentle on our environment? The number one green quality is longevity. Solz are made from materials that can endure regular washing while maintaining their shape. Next is the manufacturing practices used. These practices must use a small amount of energy, wherever possible use recyclable materials, and source materials locally to where the products are produced. Solz shoes are made from Australian cotton and wool that is recyclable, sustainable, and biodegradable.
Cotton and Merino
Solz shoes started with cotton, but while cotton is great for warmer climages, it isn't enough. We've recently added a line of shoes made from Australian superfine merino for use in colder climates.
Australian Designed and Made
From Ugh Boots to Vegemite, Australians have a long history of popular designs. Perhaps our remote location (in relation to the rest of the world) has bred a spirit in us that is self reliant and naturally inventive. And with the help of the internet, we're able to bring our ideas to the world.
